Cancun is Back ... We saw it - We believe it. We want to share this information with You.

Two agents from GBTC Travel were invited to visit Cancun by one of our suppliers - Vacation Express - for the purpose of touring [ie., inspecting] several of the Resorts in Cancun - on a Fam Trip where everything was arranged in advance.  We did that - but we also arranged to make a side trip at our expense - South of Cancun into the Riviera Maya - to  Puerto Aventura, Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen areas.  The Resorts were very excited to see us.  They know how much mis-information has been spread about Cancun and the surrounding areas. The Cancun and Mayan Sun Coast Resorts know that people trust their Travel Agents ... as our reputation depends on high levels of knowing what we sell.  We agree.

In Three Words - Cancun is Back

GBTC Travel took a number of pictures on each visit. These pictures were taken by us in mid-Feb.or on our second trip of the year in late March, 2006. We will show you what we saw ... explain the pictures ... and be honest with our presentation.  We encourage you to call us at 770-963-9846 or email us with your specific questions about any resort property, any activity, any area of Cancun or the Mayan Sun Coast. Our success in business depends on us booking you into a vacation package that meets or exceeds your expectations. We know Cancun!

NEW -- Broadband users: Here is a short promotional video produced by the Cancun -CVB- Convention and Visitors Bureau.  It runs about 4 minutes and has been conditioned for fast web viewing. The original was on a DVD. Show Video - Windows Media Player Required.

So, let’s look at a few pictures -- click {selected pix} for larger view.

A Spa Resort - Near Puerto Aventura

In General ... Resorts to the South of Cancun were less damaged and have recovered more quickly. Most Resorts in and around Playa del Carmen and Playacar are completely open and looking good.  A few more weeks of Spring will make them as green as ever !

All of us on the trip had heard about *extensive damage* to the trees and vegetation. Well, there was some damage to see away from the resorts [they are still working on some of these areas] - but mostly what we saw were trees in the process of re-growing into Spring.   The resorts [in most cases] have replanted badly damaged trees and grass.  The overall observation we made was that vegetation is recovering nicely.  As Spring returns to Cancun - normal growth will be abundant.  Here are a few pix of what we saw.  Good to Bad.

All of us on the trip had heard about *extensive damage* to the beach in Cancun.  Once again - some areas *gained beach sand*.  Most of the Resorts on the North end of the Hotel Zone did.  The long beach facing the Caribbean lost sand in some areas but a restoration operation is in full force and expected to be completed by late April. Here are a few pictures - starting with the dredging operation which WILL repair the entire beach - where the last pictures show some really bad damage.  Cancun’s beach will be restored before Summer of 2006. .  Many Resorts are OPEN.  IF you are looking for a Resort *with beach* and *no construction nearby* - contact GBTC at 770-963-9846 or email us for current conditions.

Paul P. asked to see the old Yalmakan Hotel on the South most point of the Hotel Zone.  It is now the Hoteltur - being completely refurbished due to old age -- and extensive damage. Sorry  Paul - it is undergoing major renovations I assure you - it will be better than before.

Richard T. asked about the Blue Bay Getaway.  Still there - storm damage repaired - a new disco/sports bar is being built. This is one of the North Hotel Zone Resorts that actually gained beach [more sand] during the storm. They rebuilt the kitchen and food service areas.

GBTC has had a number of people ask about the beach and pool conditions overall.  In general - if the Resort is open ... the beach is fine. Not always - so please ask before you book your trip if the beach is what you are looking for. Here are a few random photos we took of the beach at several resorts we visited.   But, believe it or not - many people go to Cancun to be poolside [swim-up bar ?] - and all of the pools we saw were were very inviting.

Almost every Travel Agent we know in Atlanta has asked us - plain and simple - how well did the Hotels that are open repair their damage?  The answer is straight forward ... of the resorts we had visited before our trip on Feb. 16-19, 2006 ... the resorts we had seen before [on other trips] looked the same or better.  For us - this was six of the 13 properties we saw on this trip.  The big difference we noticed everywhere was the palm trees.  According to a representative of the Mexico Tourism Board -- most hotels had time and were able to crop [or trim back] their trees Before the storm. This reduced the amount of wind damage.  Of course, trees that broke or were damaged otherwise - most of them have been replaced.

Katie - asked about shopping in Cancun.  Katie always asks about shopping in Cancun. We were in Cancun for a second time this Season at the end of March and had a better opportunity to visit some of the malls.  Kukulkan Mall was undergoing an exterior face lift before Wilma and this work now continues.  The inside of the mall - lower level - everything looks great. Caracol Plaza is open. Most of the shops and the same merchants are back. La Isla is open with about 30% occupancy. The Chedraui department/grocery store in downtown Cancun is open [great bakery].  Plaza Las Americas was busy as ever!

We have made a few of our shopping pictures into a slideshow.  You will find it along with our other shows in the Cancun - Hotel Zone section of our new slideshow distribution page.
