Cozumel is a moderate size island located in the Caribbean Sea just off the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and South and East from the Cancun resort area. Cozumel is about 46 miles {as the seagull flies} from Cancun. Cozumel was once a quaint fishing village, say 30 years ago - but has rapidly developed into a popular tourist destination of its own. Most of the resort management companies [hotel owners] who have property elsewhere in Mexico have built one or more resorts on Cozumel. Cozumel has gained enough tourist business to build and support their own international jet airport - although the scheduled flights inbound and outbound on Cozumel are somewhat limited when compared to the busy airport schedules of nearby Cancun. There are daily flights between Cancun and Cozumel - but not by US air carriers - and not arranged by GBTC. International flights to Cozumel take about 2 hours on a direct route out of Atlanta - but are often connecting through Orlando, Houston or Dallas. There is no bridge between Cozumel and the mainland - so the only other means of transport to the island is by ferry. Several passenger ferries serve Cozumel from several different coastal ports on the mainland. The most popular would be the ferry terminal at Playa Del Carmen. Ferries to and from Cozumel are on an hourly schedule and cost about $10-12 per passenger. The last daily ferry is mid-evening. Many visitors to Cancun make a side trip to Cozumel as part of their Yucatan experience. A visit to the shops and restaurants of Cozumel [from elsewhere in the area] should be planned to consume a full day. [continued below]

The city of San Miguel is the old fishing port and the current business center of Cozumel. The city strip is perhaps a mile wide along the western coastline and home to the original ‘Carlos and Charlies’ and a number of other somewhat famous bars and restaurants. The Plaza area of downtown San Miguel is dotted with a variety of shops which feature souvenirs, jewelry and handcrafts of all types. Most people who go to Cozumel for their vacation go there for reasons other than shopping. The most popular perhaps is the availability of nearby World Class diving and snorkeling excursions and of course deep sea fishing outings. Transportation around the island is somewhat limited - there is no city bus as in Cancun - so moving about usually involves a taxi or your rental car. Most of the resorts are not within walking distance to San Miguel and most hotels do not provide free transportation into the city. All of the Cozumel tour operators and excursions will help you with your transportation - usually by taxi, or they send a small van.
Many vacationers to Cozumel plan to spend most of their time at the resort or on planned excursions - leaving from their hotel - but most of the resorts have plenty of activities to make your stay enjoyable. For Example: Some resorts are located on better snorkeling beaches than others - some may have more theme restaurants - some cater to the dive and snorkel set while others are geared to be more -kid friendly-. Many return visitors to Cozumel have planned their return during their previous stay. Sometimes this would be to stay at the same resort year after year or might involve going to a different {or sister} resort. Cozumel is a destination where a good travel agent can help greatly in matching a new visitor - to an appropriate resort property. We have a number of repeat clients who go to Cozumel year after year - and nowhere else !
