Playa Del Carmen is a fairly small city - with a central shopping and entertainment district and serves as the ferry dock for boat rides over to Cozumel. The main street in Playa Del Carmen has been converted to an outdoor walking mall and is home to many fine little restaurants, bars and shops of all kinds. Almost everybody you encounter in Playa Del Carmen is very friendly and will speak pretty good English. Playa Del Carmen is about an hour South of Cancun.
Playacar is directly adjacent to Playa Del Carmen [the city limits of] and resembles a suburbian residential area. The streets are tree lined, clean and dotted with private residences and small condos. Many of the houses are ‘very expensive looking’. The beach is just a few steps away from the East side of Playacar. This is where most of the Resorts of Playacar have been built.
Most Resorts of Playacar provide some sort of transportation into the shopping plaza and entertainment section of Playa Del Carmen. Really - one could walk there on a nice day and enjoy the trip. Some Resorts even provide bicycles!
